is your 10-step routine actually ageing you?

at the zook lab, we love a good self-care moment. but somewhere along the way, the industry convinced us that if three products are good, ten must be better. we’ve been sold the dream of the "glass skin" 10-step routine, promised that layering acid upon acid and serum upon serum is the only way to stay young.
here’s the truth: more isn’t better. more is usually just... more. and in many cases, that elaborate routine you’re doing every morning and night might actually be fast-tracking the very things you’re trying to avoid.
skincare, decoded, is about stripping back the noise and listening to what your skin actually needs to thrive. spoiler alert: it’s not a cabinet full of harsh chemicals.
the myth of the 10-step miracle
picture this: your skin is like a high-performance car. to keep it running smoothly, you need the right fuel, a bit of oil, and a clean engine. now imagine if you tried to put five different types of high-octane fuel in at once, scrubbed the paint with sandpaper every day, and never let the engine just run. eventually, things are going to start smoking.
that’s exactly what happens when we pelt our faces with a dozen different "actives" every day. the skincare industry thrives on making us feel like we’re missing a piece of the puzzle. but by over-complicating things, we aren't building beauty; we're creating chaos
meet inflammaging: the silent ager
you might have heard us talk about the "longevity" shift in the beauty world. if you haven't, you should check out why anti-ageing got a sassy new name. essentially, the goal isn't just to look younger; it's to help our skin function better for longer.
the biggest enemy of longevity? inflammaging.
inflammaging is chronic, low-grade inflammation that bubbles away under the surface. when you use too many products: especially harsh ones like high-strength acids, retinoids, and foaming cleansers: you’re constantly "micro-injuring" your skin. your immune system stays on high alert, trying to fix the damage. over time, this chronic stress breaks down collagen and elastin (the stuff that keeps your skin bouncy) and leads to premature lines, redness, and sagging.
so, that 10-step "anti-ageing" routine? it might literally be causing inflammaging.
the destruction of the skin barrier
your skin barrier is your body’s first line of defence. it's a beautiful, complex system designed to keep moisture in and toxins out. but it’s not invincible.
when we use harsh retinoids or high-strength acids daily, we aren't just "exfoliating": we’re stripping. we’re removing the protective oils and the healthy microbiome that your skin needs to stay balanced.
here are the signs your 10-step routine has gone too far:
your skin feels tight after washing.
"basic" moisturisers suddenly sting.
you’re seeing more redness or "random" breakouts.
your skin looks shiny but feels dry (the dreaded "plastic" look).
if this sounds like you, it’s time to stop the madness. we need to prioritise protecting and building up the skin barrier, not tearing it down.
how to strip it back (the skin rehab)
it’s time for some common sense. if your skin is screaming, the best thing you can do is give it a break. we call this "skin rehab." for 2-4 weeks, we want you to put down the "toxic" skincare ingredients and the high-tech gadgets and just let your skin breathe.
cleanse gently: stop the double-cleansing with harsh foams. use a simple, plant-based cream or oil cleanser that doesn’t leave your face feeling "squeaky clean" (squeaky is bad: it means your oils are gone).
moisturise with purpose: look for clean, natural ingredients like jojoba, squalane, or shea butter that mimic your skin's natural lipids.
stop the actives: put the retinol and the glycolic acid in the back of the drawer. your skin needs a chance to regenerate through its own natural processes, like autophagy, without being poked and prodded.
once your skin feels calm and resilient again, you can slowly reintroduce things: but only what you actually need.
sun protection: the zook lab way
while we’re talking about routines, let’s talk about the big one: sunscreen. the industry tells you to wear it "all day every day," even if you’re sitting in a dark office in the middle of winter.
we advocate for mindful sun protection. natural sunlight is essential for vitamin d production and our overall health. we don’t need to be afraid of it for a quick walk to the shops or a drive to work.
prioritise physical coverage first:
wear natural fibres like cotton and linen.
grab a good wide-brimmed hat.
seek out the shade.
if you’re spending a full day at the beach or hiking in the midday sun, then reach for a zinc-based (mineral) sunscreen. it’s much more natural for your skin and provides a physical barrier rather than a chemical one that can further irritate a compromised skin barrier.
less is more for longevity
the goal of the zook lab is to help you decode the bs. the beauty industry wants you to buy ten products because that’s how they make money. they use "natural" marketing hype to hide ingredients that actually stress your skin out.
by choosing clean, plant-based, and vegan products, and keeping your routine minimal, you’re giving your skin the space it needs to heal and thrive. remember: your body has an incredible, innate ability to look after itself if you just provide the basics.
